This August, we partnered with our friends at Humble Brands - a sustainable wellness company that provides clean products to their customers. The products are quality, they smell good and are good for the community.
After my own diagnosis back in 2008, I can't help but remember that my tumor was in my armpit. Since then, I have been very diligent on using organic, paraben-free cosmetics and body care. The American Cancer Society states, there are no strong epidemiologic studies in the medical literature that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use, and very little scientific evidence to support this claim. However, since my cancer diagnosis, I've been trying to make better choices across the board - so why not start with deodorant?
After working with our friends at Handful back in September of 2021, we were introduced to Katie Kirkwood, Outreach Manager for Humble. We bonded. We connected. And together, we wanted to bring Humble to our community. For the month of August, we created a Fighting Pretty x Humble Pretty Package carefully curated including inspirational Fight Gear with hand crafted soap made of moisturizing shea butter and olive oil and all-natural deodorant in four different scents.
Read on for how this came to be.
Kara (Fighting Pretty): Katie, it is so good to connect! Tell our readers how our collab came to be.
Katie (Humble): We partnered up with Handful, Fighting Pretty, Nuun, and Another Mother Runner to create the 'Strong + Supported Gift Box' for women battling cancer during the pandemic. For every box sold, $40 was donated directly to Fighting Pretty. It was such a fun collaboration of brands working to make a difference. We are grateful to have been a part of it!
Kara (Fighting Pretty): We can look up what the definition of "Humble" is, but what is the story behind Humble and its name?
Katie (Humble): Humble Brands was founded by Jeff Shardell who was stressed and overworked from his tech job in the bay area. He began rethinking his whole life: right down to the products he put on his body. When he learned that the deodorant he used every day was filled with harmful chemicals, he quickly switched to natural products. Unfortunately, everything he tried left him sweaty and smelling like perfume. Not to mention their ingredients lists were long and confusing.
Determined to find a better, simpler solution, Jeff began experimenting with ingredients in his kitchen. His personal mission marked the birth of Humble Brands. Simple, natural ingredients that actually work!
Kara (Fighting Pretty): Love that story so much. I truly believe every great idea comes from personal experience. What is your favorite Humble product and why?
Katie (Humble): I'm in love with our Vegan & Sensitive Skin Deodorant in Moroccan Rose and I've been using it for about two years. I originally started using the Original Formula in Mountain Lavender and Holy Basil, but about six months in I started developing a rash. I had no idea that baking soda can cause irritation for some people and I'm so glad Humble Brands offers a Sensitive Skin line! The scent is so subtle and beautiful.
Kara (Fighting Pretty): Can you give us a Humble Tip?
Katie (Humble): At Humble Brands, we're big fans of "less is more" and "intentional ingredients." These ideas can also transfer over to being intentional and strategic with how you spend your time, where you spend your energy, and who you engage with on a personal and professional level. Even though we're bombarded with the message that bigger, louder, and more is better, it's often the quiet simple moments that are more fulfilling.
Kara (Fighting Pretty): At Fighting Pretty, we strive to help everyone to feel strong and beautiful no matter what they are facing. What helps you feel strong and beautiful?
Katie (Humble): I feel the most strong and beautiful after an awesome workout class. I used to wear tank tops under my shirt at soccer practice in high school because I was so paranoid about sweat stains.
Now I feel so pumped when I sweat through a shirt because it means I'm working hard. I'm also a fan of mascara and eyelash curlers to help me feel ready to take on the day - even if I'm just working from home in sweatpants with my two kiddos!
